Crew that caused fire lacked hot works permit…

Demolition company involved in Grand Rapids fire could face legal action.

A work crew responsible for causing this month’s massive fire at the old Kindel factory did not have a “hot” permit needed to work in potentially hazardous sites, fire investigators said.

The workers’ employer could be fined $250 and possibly face other penalties, said Ric Dokter, a Grand Rapids Fire Department investigator. “I’m not going to say there couldn’t be other legal action,” Dokter said.

The fire seriously damaged the vacant factory at 100 Garden St. SE on May 9, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky.
